Hi David I found the blogging great fun last year and a good way of keeping in touch with everyone. Will you publish links to this year's blogs so those of us who still check the blogs can watch the progress of the new bloggers? Thanks Jackie
After the tremendous success of last year's blog project, I'm broadening it out this year to include more students. Tomorrow I'll be introducing the project to Diploma, Masters and Degree Landscape Architecture and Garden Design students. Fortunately, I the experience if introducing the project last year and (fingers crossed) there will be fewer mistakes. Still, it all adds to the fun of what is essentially an experiment.
No, this is not one of Damien Hirst's spin paintings . Visual impact analysis is just one aspect of visual impact assessment. The idea is to create a picture of the visibility of some new development (a power station, a wind farm, a sports stadium etc.) within the landscape. We use a number of tools to do this but the two chief tools (and the ones that have become my own specialism) are photomontage and ZVI. The image above shows a ZVI I did a couple of weeks ago for a new Energy from Waste pow...
The issue of privacy (with respect to this project) has been hotly debated over the past few weeks. Essentially, views have been polarised with the majority feeling that blog musings MUST be public (a sort of 'spirit of the free web') with a minority feeling that these blogs should never be brought to the attention of the general public (or, at least, the readers of the Garden Design Journal). Personally, I have a natural inclination to the former and perhaps it is this that caused me to underestimate the feelings of the latter. I think the best course of action has been to protect the 'privacy' of those who have requested it. To that end, I have removed a number of links to student blogs and I have also removed the links to the project homepage so that they can't be found by the 'back door'. Regrettably, two students felt compelled to delete their blogs. I still most definitely feel that blogging is a brilliant educational tool and this project has only enf...
