Almost a full house

Rubus fruticosus (Bramble)Almost there. I now have 33 student blogs listed out of a total of 36 (or 38 - we're not sure) students. I spent this afternoon with the Landscape Architecture students doing our usual session of AutoCAD, Plant ID and this week an introduction to SketchUp, which they appear to like very much. We also talked about the blog and most of them seem to be getting to grips with the Blogger environment, adding links to their page, uploading images etc. This is all very encouraging and the project is now starting to take shape.

I would like to make another appearance in front of the Garden Designers since they may have some comments to make or questions to be answered. I have received emails from many of them (which is good) but it's often the case that the ones that need most help are the ones that keep quiet about it. Also, our first meeting wasn't exactly electric so I'd like to improve on that. I'll talk to Jamie about doing a short session on Monday 7th November.

I notice that this blog is starting to look a bit wordy so I've included one of my plant test images from last week - The Autunm Hedgerow. If you're using Internet Explorer, you can mouseover the image for the answer. If you're using Firefox, you can right-click the image and choose "Properties".

Here I am demonstrating how easy it is to post a new article using Blogger. I think that went reasonably well. The Dip and MA students seem "up for it". I also asked each of them to complete the Internet Survey questionaire. It will be intersting to see if the results are different this year.

What is visual impact analysis?

No, this is not one of Damien Hirst's spin paintings . Visual impact analysis is just one aspect of visual impact assessment. The idea is to create a picture of the visibility of some new development (a power station, a wind farm, a sports stadium etc.) within the landscape. We use a number of tools to do this but the two chief tools (and the ones that have become my own specialism) are photomontage and ZVI. I'm sure you're all aware of photomontages although the ones I create have to be super accurate and involve a great deal of survey work. Few of you may be aware of the ZVI (Zone of Visual Impact or Influence). The result of a ZVI analysis is a map showing where various parts of a new development may be visible from. I won't go into the detail of how this works since it is quite complicated but those of you who are interested should come back and do the diploma year at Greenwich. A new year, a new project

After the tremendous success of last year's blog project, I'm broadening it out this year to include more students. Tomorrow I'll be introducing the project to Diploma, Masters and Degree Landscape Architecture and Garden Design students. Fortunately, I the experience if introducing the project last year and (fingers crossed) there will be fewer mistakes. Still, it all adds to the fun of what is essentially an experiment.
