Posting problem

As with all "experimental" projects, we only discover the minor glitches as we go along. This project is no exception. I still need to do some work on the image placement issue but this week a more troublesome problem came to light. One student was unable to make a new post on Blogger. The symptom was quite specific; when a post was made, the post title was sent and posted correctly but the body of the post just disappeared, so the post, when it appeared on the blog consisted of a title but no content. I am convinced that this was caused by some sort of security setting but we still have been unable to pin-point it.

The solution was to switch to a different browser. The problem occurred with Internet Explorer, the browser that most of you will be using. However, when Firefox was used, the problem vanished and posts were made normally. So, if you are experiencing similar difficulties, switch to Firefox - it's free and you can get it here. I have no hesitation in recommending Firefox, it's an excellent browser and has some nice features such as tabbed browsing. It is also much more secure than IE.

Rebellion

Well, my last entry has caused quite a stir. I’ve received more emails and comments about this project in the last 12 hours than in the whole of the rest of the project. So, what happened? Well, we (the Garden Design teaching team) were invited to contribute a short article to the “Pass notes” section of the Garden Design Journal. The aim of that section is to provide students with useful small chunks of information relevant to their studies. Previous articles have included; Creative Thinking, Work Experience and Tutorials. Since we feel we are doing something new and interesting with the blog project, we felt that it would be ideal for “Pass notes”. Why keep a good idea to yourself? So, Annie was quite right in her comment; our aim was indeed to “communicate the idea of this (potentially successful) exercise to students and tutors of other colleges who might want to try it out”.
